Five-Peat: Signifyd is named a best place to work for the fifth year running

Northern California’s leading business journals have named Signifyd to their Best Places to Work list for the fifth year in a row.

And no, it doesn’t get old — being recognized by the Silicon Valley Business Journal and the San Francisco Business Times. Bragging and bubbling pride aside, it’s probably clear to anyone that an honor celebrating organizational excellence, mentoring, training, teamwork and camaraderie lands with a particularly sweet scent in the midst of COVID-19 and the disruptions it has unleashed on all of us.

If ever there were a time that being the best place to work is put to the test, it’s when no one can actually be at work. Instead, like many in the world, Signifyers are working from home and celebrating this much-appreciated honor alone, together — emphasis on together. 

In announcing the award, which is based on independently reviewed employee surveys, the business journals pointed to an employee quote that captured the qualities that landed Signifyd on their list. 

“My company shows a ton of support for its employees. Any organization can have great benefits and perks, but the most important and difficult thing to build is the culture. The culture and the people who are in it are the reason that I love coming to work.”

  • For the fifth year in a row, the Silicon Valley Business Journal and the San Francisco Business Times has named Signifyd among the Best Places to Work in the Bay Area.
  • Inclusion on the list is based on a survey of company employees.
  • The list is compiled based on surveys of thousands of employees at companies in a 12-county Bay Area region including Silicon Valley and stretching from Sonoma County to Monterey County.

Beyond employee comments, Quantum Workplace reviewed surveys that asked employees about personal engagement, trust in leadership, personal satisfaction, perks, benefits and the degree of collaboration in the workplace culture. 

“We’ve focused intently on keeping Signifyd’s values at the center of everything we do and it’s immensely gratifying to know that when an entire company lives those values, it results in the kind of culture that makes a difference in both customers’ and employees’ lives,” said Signifyd Vice President of People Operations Emily Mikailli. 

Signifyd’s culture has grown with the company

Signifyd’s Best Places to Work awards, spanning 2016 to 2020, trace the company’s growth — moving from the smallest company category to the midsize company category — and it chronicles how the company has doubled-down on what works when building a successful culture. 

Over the years, the Silicon Valley Business Journal and the San Francisco Business Times have applauded Signifyd’s transparency, reflected in practices such as frequent and all-hands meetings where executives report on progress of key company goals and Signifyers celebrate individual and team accomplishments. 

The business publications have noted that Signifyd conducts monthly manager training and is specific and transparent about what employees need to master to achieve their career goals. They have pointed out that Signifyd provides LinkedIn Learning licenses to all employees and other career development opportunities to help them get to where they want to be.

The company has also maintained its culture while growing from a startup to a midsized company with a global workforce. The San Jose headquarters maintains a strong connection with Signifyd’s Belfast R&D center, which opened last year, and with remote workers and offices around the country. 

In a time when we’ve all become remote workers, the culture that has been built and fostered over the years is more evident than ever. Signifyers have continued throughout the pandemic to support the company’s more than 10,000 customers conducting ecommerce in more than 100 countries. 

Distributed teams are a part of Signifyd’s DNA

The move from Signifyd offices to home offices was relatively seamless, in large part because Signifyd embraced the concept of distributed teams from the beginning. Signifyd Co-Founder and Chief Product Officer Michael Liberty has been a remote worker since the company’s infancy. He, along with Co-Founder and CEO Raj Ramanand, understood the power of being able to hire the best engineering talent no matter where the person possessing that talent resides. 

But sure, it’s a little different with COVID-19 and with everyone working remotely. That’s where company culture and values come in — Curious & Hungry, Tenacious, Customer Compassion, Design for Scale, Agile, Roll Up Your Sleeves. 

Regular meetings are on. Collaboration is happening. Problem-solving, trouble-shooting, innovation, brainstorming — it all continues unabated. And there are regular Zoom hangouts, happy hours, movie nights and game sessions, where it is evident that those gathered really want to see each other, even if it’s via a Brady Bunch configuration on a screen. 

“The people who work here are all great and make it not feel so much a ‘job,'” one Signifyer added to the Best Places survey, “but a place to go to every day to come hang out with friends (while completing work on time of course).”
